About Cango Caves

The Cango Caves are a series of spectacular limestone caverns. These caves are renowned for their stunning stalactite and stalagmite formations, which have been shaped over millions of years through geological processes

The Cango Caves are found in Precambrian limestone and the cave system itself is believed to be around 20 million years old.

The Cango Caves have been used since prehistory (including the Middle and Later Stone Ages of the region). They were later lost to history and were rediscovered in 1780 by a local farmer. The caves are the largest show cave system in Africa and are the oldest tourist attraction in South Africa (first becoming a popular tourist attraction in the 1800s).
